KUGELMENSCH

monitors, soundproofing foam, plywood, styrofoam, thermoplastic, 2025

GLASMOOG Academy of Media Arts Cologne

In Plato’s Symposium, humanity originated as “sphere people” of three genders, who were so whole and powerful, Zeus cut each of them in half. From that moment, every half longed for its lost partner. The interactive installation “Kugelmensch” includes three pairs of tools, bearing the ancient symbols of the sun (male/male), the earth (female/female) and the moon (male/female). The tools and their sinoid surface can be aligned perfectly to create a whole, or connect to the same foam covering two monitors. One displays other “Passformen” already integrated into the shape of the body, such as hands fitting together in a handshake or a hug. The other shows an animation of the unity circle transforming into the sine wave - endless repetition on the spot develops into repetition in progression, moving forward.
